International Ramadhan Fair
The International Ramadhan Fair is the first of its kind event that would bring together Muslims and Non-Muslims to showcase the beauty of Islamic culture particularly the great virtue of the month of Ramadan. The fair hopes to provide a venue to broaden understanding and perspective on various Muslim cultures and the tenets of Islam.
As part of the Islamic culture all over the world, Ramadan is undeniably the most festive month. During this season, it is common for devout Muslims to go to the Masjid and spend several hours praying and reading the Qur’an. In addition to the five daily prayers, Muslims perform a special prayer called the Taraweeh prayer (Night Prayer). It is also customary to go out and visit family and friends and break the fast together during the Iftar. Elders and religious leaders relate the story and the virtue of Ramadan, the story of Prophet Muhammad, among others, to the younger generations. These activities have remained in the Islamic culture all over despite the modern times.
On the evening of the 27th day of the month, Muslims celebrate the Laylat-al-Qadr (the Night of Power). It is believed that on this night Prophet Muhammad first received the revelation of the Holy Qur’an. According to the Qur’an, this is when Allah (swt) determines the course of the world for the following year. When the fast ends (the first day of the month of Shawwal), it is celebrated for three days in a holiday called Eid-al-Fitr (the Feast of Fast Breaking). Gifts and pleasantries are exchanged and zakat (percentage of a year’s earnings) are given to the poor. Friends and family gather to pray in congregation and for large meals.
